The appliance was a large two burner spit roaster BBQ mounted on a trailer. Both sides of the BBQ were being used. When it was noticed that one side had gone out, the hood of that side was raised. It appears the unburned gas was ignited by the side that was still working.
 
The trailer was home-made and it was not established who the builder was.
