Event summary:
The Fire Service notified Energy Safety of the explosive ignition of butane gas leaking from a canister cooker. Two male children were injured and hospitalised. They sustained moderate to minor burns to their arms, upper torso and face/head. There was fire damage to wall and ceiling surfaces and fittings and the microwave door had melted.

Outcome of investigation:
The occupant of the house told the Fire Service that she knew the appliance was leaky and had instructed the two boys not to use it. They are alleged to have used the appliance in any case, and the resulting leak caused the explosions which hospitalised them and damaged the kitchen. The occupant was unable to show investigators the appliance as it had been disposed of.
No further action was taken as it appears to be misuse.
