All operators of facilities and proposed facilities at which specified hazardous substances are present or likely to be present over the specified threshold must notify us.
We will then decide if your facility or proposed facility is a lower tier major hazard facility (LTMHF), an upper tier major hazard facility (UTMHF) or neither. We then designate the facility as appropriate.
We have produced guidance to help an operator of a facility or proposed facility with the process of notification, submitting a design notice, calculation of hazardous substance quantities, and designation.
Major hazard facilities: Notifications and designations
This offers advice on the process of notification, and designation under the Health and Safety at Work (Major Hazard Facilities) Regulations 2016(external link). It will also help a proposed facility that may exceed the upper threshold with preparing a design notice.
This guidance is one of a suite of major hazard facility guidance that includes information on emergency planning, major accident prevention policies and safety management systems, notifications and designations, safety assessments and safety cases.
