α-Quartz and cristobalite are confirmed carcinogens.
Significant risk to workers will remain at WES-TWA exposures of 0.025mg/m³. The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has estimated the lifetime silicosis mortality risk for workers exposed at this level for 8 hours per day at between 4 and 22 deaths per 1,000 workers and the lifetime lung cancer mortality risk for workers exposed at this level for 8 hours per day at between 3 and 23 deaths per 1,000 workers.
