What is a notifiable event?

You need to notify us of any serious injury, illness, or incident that happens to a person or people carrying out work, or as a result of work that your business or organisation is responsible for. This is a requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA).

Other reasons to notify WorkSafe

Report an unsafe or unhealthy work situation

• Complaint about an authorisation holder – if you have a complaint or concern about a particular authorisation holder.
• Electrical and gas product appliance complaint – if you have a complaint about an electrical or gas product.
• Electrical and gas installation fault notice – notify us about an electrical or gas installation fault. 
• Health or safety concern – if you have a concern about an unsafe or unhealthy work situation that could lead to a death or serious injury or illness.
• Mentally healthy work concern – if the business or organisation you work for is not meeting their obligations to look after your mental health at work.
• Occupational disease or illness – notify us about an occupational disease or illness, including asbestos exposure.
• Protected disclosure – if you want to blow the whistle on a serious wrongdoing by the organisation you work (or have worked) for.

Report an unsafe or unhealthy work situation

• Asbestos removal – notify us of upcoming licensed asbestos removal work.
• Commissioning of hazardous substance location or transit depot – notify us before commissioning a hazardous substance location or a tranist depot. 
• Extractives – notify us of mining, tunnelling and quarry and alluvial mine high risk activities.
• Geothermal – if you are a bore owner or manager and need to notify us or apply for a consent.
• Intended detonation and deflagration of Class 1 substance – notify us of intended blasting of Class 1 substances for mines, quarries, and tunnels.
• Particular hazardous work – notify us of particular hazardous work. 
• Petroleum – if you are a drilling contractor or permit operator and need to notify us of certain well operations.
• Temporary storage for a pest control operation or pesticide application - we need to be notified of a temporary storage site of a 6.1A, 6.1B or 6.1C substance associated with the immediate start of a pest control operation or pesticide application task under certain circumstances.

Major hazard facilities

• Use the major hazard facilities form if your major hazard facility has specified hazardous substances present or are likely to be present. 

Electrical and gas non-workplace event

• Notify us of a non-workplace electricity or gas accident, including a non workplace death.
