On 18 April 2018 the victim was a student enrolled in a 36-week carpentry course at Otago Polytechnic. The victim was using the Wadkin draw serial number #CD1219 to cut a length of timber into blocking. As the victim was attempting to pull the timber, his left hand slipped off the piece of timber and came into contact with the front of the spinning blade of the draw saw, and he sustained partial amputation of his middle finger, and cuts/grazes to both his index and ring fingers of his left hand.
