WorkSafe has granted exemptions to the asbestos assessor and the PCBUs with oversight of asbestos removal at Hillary’s Hut, Scott Base, in Antarctica during November 2016.
The exemptions have been granted because it is not reasonably practicable to have an independent licensed asbestos assessor carry out the monitoring and inspection work associated with this asbestos removal project.
The exemptions are made subject to terms and conditions that:
- ensure the exemptions are not inconsistent with the principle that workers and other persons should be given the highest level of protection against harm to their health, safety, and welfare from hazards and risks arising from work or specific types of plant as is reasonably practicable; and
- preserve the objectivity of the asbestos assessment in the absence of independence.
