HSNO codes of practice are not approved codes of practice under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA). However, in the absence of specific HSWA guidance, they may still provide useful guidance in how to meet your duties under HSWA and the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.
HSNO codes of practice (HSNOCOPs) set out how to comply with HSNO and the HSNO regulations or provide an alternative way of complying with the HSNO regulations.
Because the new Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 replace the HSNO regulations for the workplace, some HSNOCOPs will no longer be valid.
Some of these HSNOCOPs have been replaced by safe work instruments, some will be replaced with Work Safe Approved Codes of Practice and others will be replaced by guidance from WorkSafe.
HSNOCOPs for matters that remain under HSNO, such as the top-of-the-supply-chain rules for importers and manufacturers about content of labels or safety data sheets, will remain in effect.
HSNO codes that relate to HSNO regulations which have been replaced by the HSWA (Hazardous Substances) regulations may still be relevant to those who have buildings or equipment made under these previous codes.Â
While this guidance has not been updated to reflect current work health and safety legislation (the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and regulations), it may still contain relevant information and practices to keep workers and others healthy and safe.
Please read this guidance in conjunction with all relevant industry standards that apply to you as a PCBU. This guidance will be progressively reviewed and either updated, replaced with other guidance, or revoked.
