WorkSafe's Leadership Fundamentals programme has been recognised with an international award.

In this year's Brandon Hall Group's Excellence Awards, WorkSafe was awarded bronze in the category for best unique or innovative leadership development programme.

The award is judged on how well the programme addresses the leadership goals of the organisation, with measurable benefits and a positive impact.

The WorkSafe Leadership Fundamentals programme is available to all WorkSafe staff, and aims to create real opportunity for change and development.

The programme has been developed by WorkSafe for WorkSafe, in collaboration with a design team of people leaders and other staff to meet the needs of the organisation.

It consists of 30-minute eLearning modules on four topics, followed by a full-day workshop for each topic, run by a team of internal and external trainers in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch. The workshops are an opportunity to practice their learning, drawing on participants' experience and real-life scenarios, with a focus on constructive dialogue. Staff can choose to attend the workshops in any order.

The four topics are:

  • Performance conversations
  • Effective communication
  • Effective workplace relationships
  • Mastering conflict.

The workshops were developed with Sysdoc, a specialist consultancy that works with clients to deliver practical and sustainable solutions that drive significant improvement in business performance.

The programme was piloted from September to December 2018, after nine months of development. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Over 80% of participants agreed they were confident to apply the learning from the workshops.

WorkSafe plans to extend the programme to include other development areas identified in the organisation’s people strategy.
