Asbestos is New Zealand’s number one workplace killer. It is estimated that around 170 people die each year from asbestos-related disease. This week, 9-13 April, is Asbestos Awareness Week.

In conjunction with the New Zealand Demolition and Asbestos Association (NZDAA), we’re putting a spotlight on the dangers of asbestos exposure and the key things businesses and tradespeople need to know when working around asbestos.

“Highlighting the risks from asbestos this week is part of how we’re making sure that everyone who goes to work comes home healthy and safe,” says Simon Humphries, Deputy General Manager Investigations and Specialist Services.

A free conference and expo will be held at Alexandra Park in Auckland on Thursday. It includes workshops to help tradies understand where asbestos can be found, what PPE to wear, what an asbestos management plan involves, and the recent changes to the regulations.
